There's a rumor that REWE, a big food store in Germany, might open a vegan shop in Berlin. The company hasn't confirmed it, but a website saw a sign saying "REWE completely plant-based" during renovations.
The new store sits where Veganz, the world's first major vegan supermarket, used to be. Veganz closed in 2023 to concentrate on making products. There were plans for a London store, but they fell through, leading to the closure of all European Veganz outlets. This spot was famous as the pioneer vegan street. It's fitting that the new supermarket maintains the vegan tradition.
REWE has expanded its plant-based options, adding a plant-based meat counter. BILLA, a subsidiary, opened two plant-based stores in Vienna and Graz, Austria, with plant-based sections in 21 more. It's uncertain if the new REWE store will be entirely vegan, free from animal testing and involvement.
Germany, with 1.5 million vegans and 40 million flexitarians, is ripe for vegan supermarkets. A 2023 survey of 1,026 Germans found 21% feel grocery stores lack enough plant-based options. Consequently, 29% would purchase more vegan products with a wider selection. Residents of East Berlin might anticipate expanded choices.
