Poll Reveals British Public Does Not Know the Reality of the Egg Industry

The UK Animal Justice Project released findings from a YouGov poll on egg industry awareness. Consumers lack knowledge about industry cruelty but still buy eggs.

A study of 2,305 UK adults found 68% buy eggs regularly, and 59% prioritize animal welfare. Millennials, especially, care about it, with 63% considering it when purchasing eggs. Interestingly, 64% wrongly believe hens have daily outdoor access, and 82% are unaware hens are slaughtered at 18 months. Notably, 57% disapprove of killing chicks within 24 hours, yet it occurs to 29 million chicks annually in the UK.

The Animal Justice Project's Cage-free Isn't Cruelty-free campaign reveals hens' suffering in all housing systems. Despite promises to go cage-free by 2025, the reality remains grim for millions of hens moved to barns or free-range farms.

The latest study found hens confined indoors for days on "free-range" farms. Previous research showed free-range hens slaughtered young.
